Book 5: Chapter 229: Weakness
Book 5: Chapter 229: Weakness
With Tadashi gone, Luna lost interest in wandering around.
Thinking that she had already met the officials of this world, she decided to believe that they wouldn’t be foolish enough to challenge her boundaries repeatedly. So, she turned and walked into a hotel on the street.
“I want the best room.”
“Sure, that’ll be 288 dollars a night.”
The woman at the front desk looked up and seemed surprised when she saw Luna’s face. Then, she seemed to recall something and displayed a flicker of fear.
“What’s wrong?” Luna asked.
“N-Nothing! You want the best room, right?”
“Yes, the best.” Luna confirmed, then casually handed over a stack of red bills and said, “Keep the change; I’m not sure how long I’ll be staying.”
“S-Sure, I’ll arrange that for you right away.”
The woman accepted the money and began searching for the key in the drawer. For some reason, her hands trembled slightly, and she accidentally knocked over a cup of hot tea on the table.
The woman shot up straight when the hot tea scalded her, and hurriedly wiped the hot liquid off her clothes.@@@@
“Don’t worry, take your time,” Luna assured softly.
“N-No..., I’m happy to serve my customers unconditionally. After all, there’s a saying that customers are Gods...”
The woman forced a smile that looked uglier than her crying face and added, “We can’t possibly keep a God waiting.”
Luna smiled and replied, “True, though I don’t particularly like that God you mentioned.”
“Haha, I don’t like Him either.” The woman laughed awkwardly.
After a moment of searching, the woman finally found the key.
“H-Here... here’s the key to room 201. You can find it right away once you go upstairs.”
Luna took the key, raising her eyebrows as she asked, “Don’t you need an ID card to register here?”
“N-No... we prioritize service here, so an ID card isn’t necessary.”
“I see.” Luna nodded, albeit unconvinced, then turned to walk upstairs. But halfway up, she suddenly turned back and asked, “Is there a PC in the room?”
“Yes...” The woman awkwardly placed her hand on the landline phone, unable to decide whether to move or stay still. She forced a smile and explained, “Our best room comes with a computer. There’s also a chess and card room, as well as a cafe on the third floor. You’re welcome to use those facilities.”
“If she recognized her, then so be it. Send someone to take over the hotel temporarily to facilitate surveillance. Don’t take any other actions.”
“Do you need to send someone with special abilities?”
“Hmm...”
The man pondered for a moment, then said, “Forget it. Given the power displayed by the target, sending someone with special abilities would likely be useless. Ordinary people are less likely to raise her suspicions.”
The secretary snapped the file shut and replied, “Understood.”
“Anything else?” Seeing that the secretary didn’t leave immediately, the man instinctively sensed that something unexpected had occurred.
“About the boy who’s very close to the target...”
“What happened to him?”
“He had been kidnapped.”
“Kidnapped?” The man was puzzled.
“Who would kidnap a little beggar? A human trafficker?” he asked.
“No, the perpetrator was a clerk at a jewelry store the target had visited before, a man named Wang Defa. The target sold high-purity gold coins worth millions there for only 300,000 dollars in cash. Wang Defa had worked as an appraiser in that store, but not long ago, he was fired by his boss after he and the manager embezzled the difference from the sale of the gold coins. The boss then called the police to recover the lost funds.”
The man pondered for a moment before saying, “In other words... that little beggar had been kidnapped because he was unlucky and got involved?”
“It’s very likely that Wang Defa’s true target was the target herself. However, when he attempted the crime, our people had just led her away. In his desperation, he turned his attention to the little beggar, who was close to her. This entire process happened to be captured by our roadside surveillance cameras; otherwise, no one would have noticed the little beggar’s disappearance and reported it to the police.”
“Heh, indeed. Who would care about a little beggar that has gone missing?”
“What should we do now? Should we send someone to rescue the little beggar?” the secretary asked.
Tap, tap, tap...
The man habitually tapped his fingers on the table.
“No. Send someone to pass this message to the target instead.”
“You are thinking to...”
“If a person has someone they care about, their invincibility can easily be shattered without direct confrontation,” the man explained smugly. “I believe we may have found her weakness.”
