Chapter 1086 - 267: City of Demons
Ethan was awakened by the sound of hammering. As soon as he opened his eyes, he inhaled a deep breath of smog, carrying a strong acrid and sour smell. Rubbing his eyes, he saw a humanoid creature with two heads staring at him in puzzlement. The creature was bare-chested, its rough dark green skin dotted with grain-like lumps. It was holding an iron hammer, continuously striking an object resembling an anvil, causing sparks to fly with each hit.
"I didn’t see you get on the train."
Spoke the left head in a deep voice, while the right head focused on working, not lifting its eyes to look at Ethan.
Ethan looked around and realized this was a train platform.
An old steam engine churned out a red-black unidentified gas from its chimney.
Ethan stood out among the surrounding passengers. Though most appeared humanoid, their skins were predominantly red or purple, which the book "100 Dark Creatures You Should Know" described as demon skin.
They had fangs and a pair of cunning eyes. As Ethan conversed with the suspected coachman, the two-headed creature, some sharp demons had already sensed him as a "foreigner." Their unfriendly gazes hinted at possible racial discrimination.
"I told you, I didn’t see you get on the train."
The left head of the two-headed creature emphasized again, appearing somewhat angry. The right head’s controlling hand also stopped, giving Ethan a "What’re you looking at? Look again and I’ll bash you" glare.
Now Ethan knew, this was the dream of the Lord of the Holy City. He hadn’t dreamed of a bionic sheep; here lay a group of ill-tempered demons suspected of racial bias, or more accurately, this was the homeland of demons, a... civilization long destroyed, according to the God of Truth’s database.
Through the window, Ethan looked outside. Compared to planets corrupted to mere lumps, signs of civilization still lingered here.
The train platform, the trading corner, the technology even seemed more advanced than the Empire, albeit shrouded in a strong demonic style.
"For the third time, I said I didn’t see you get on the train!"
This time, both heads spoke together, the right head’s controlling hand raised the hammer high, as if about to strike Ethan’s head next.
"Big guy, he’s my friend!"
A lively female voice came from behind Ethan, providing a sense of relief for Ethan.
An unfamiliar demon lady stepped forward to help him out, a few steps slower and he might have been embroiled in a bloody murder not long after arriving in this world.
Because at the moment the two-headed demon raised the hammer, Ethan’s mind was filled with bizarre ideas.
Like, if he tore off one of its heads, could it still live?
Ethan could understand the conversation between the demon girl and "Two Heads," but he still faked a strong accent, saying in a fluctuating tone, "Sorry, Moi is frahm a foreign land!"
The left head finally stopped finding fault, bowing to focus on hammering.
"Humans! It’s been a long time since a human visited here!"
The demon girl looked at Ethan with curious eyes. Compared to other demons, her skin was much lighter, closer to wax yellow, most noticeable was the slender heart-shaped tail at its tip behind her.
Her looks conformed to human aesthetics.
The only good news was, there wasn’t a heart brewing in her pupils, otherwise Ethan would have difficulty explaining to Lindong.
"Excuse moi, Moi ’ave a terrible demon language skill, cannot understand!"
Ethan guessed the demon girl’s type. Though very grateful for her help, considering Lindong might be nearby, he decided to keep a distance from the girl.
"Stop pretending."
The demon girl covered her mouth with a chuckle, "There’s no language gap between us, not even dialect."
There you go, why didn’t you say so earlier!
Ethan blushed. Look at you, kid, making it awkward like this.
He cleared his throat, explaining, "I just want to keep a low profile, avoid causing trouble."
"Angela."
The demon girl extended her tail, seemingly wanting to shake hands with Ethan.
The temptation of the devil.
This phrase surfaced in Ethan’s mind.
"You’re really an odd human!"
Seeing Ethan hesitating, the slender tail took it upon itself to wrap around his arm, dragging Ethan out of the train as Angela spoke to herself, "Are you someone from the syndicate? The master hasn’t brought a human to our realm for quite some time now."
That’s normal.
Ethan knew the answer in his heart—after the Abyss collapsed, Lady Xiangwei, the new leader of the syndicate, took the syndicate solo.
Yet Ethan did not tell Angela the truth he knew, because demons are the most cunning creatures in this world, and he couldn’t ascertain if Angela’s innocence was genuine.
Perhaps his encounter with "Two Heads" on the train was arranged by Angela or Sincaro himself.
Angela moved forward, saying to herself, "If you’re from the syndicate, you should’ve heard of my sister, the wise Succubus Queen!"
In fact, Ethan hadn’t heard of her at all.
He only knew the difference between red eyes and ordinary demons, and Angela was a very typical "black-eyed" demon.
"You must’ve heard of her; she signed a contract with all the syndicate believers, enslaving the entire syndicate!" Angela’s eyes gleamed when talking about her sister, "Oh, right, since you’re a believer of the syndicate, you ought to call her Master!"
